For phenomenal success - see end of story

This is my personal opinion on laserpuncture treatment from Mr Albert Bohbot , and how he has helped me. I started my treatment in June, 2001. The treatment that Mr Bohbot does on people with spinal cord injuries costs comparatively little at 90 Euros a session. The main expenses are for accomodation and travelling. I go as often as I can for 12 days (10 treatments) and since going to France I am now strong enough to drive several hundred miles from Calais to the Loire Valley.  The laserpuncture treatment along with the physiotherapy and osteopathy; go hand in hand - one doesn't work without the other.

Since my road traffic incident over 30 years ago I always had  muscle spasms (involuntary movements).

My spinal cord injury is C5/6. I was a complete, but after startng laserpuncture, I began to get some feeling and small movements in parts of my body below the level of my injury; at first this was slight and one had to look closely to see it.

Up to March, 2006 the recovery I had was quite phenomenal. However, I must point out here that the treatment is slow progress and is NOT a miracle cure. Mr Bohbot's treatment manages to bypass the damaged spinal cord and send messages through the Meridian System (accupuncture points) to send messages to the body. As one receives these messages through the accupuncture points, it is very necessary to work hard with daily physiotherapy in order to use the messages to strengthen muscles that have been absent for any length of time.

One thing all patients need to be aware of is that laserpuncture works differently for everyone in terms of progress. Each person receives the same treatment, but the complicated nervous system deals with the healing process in it's own unique way. No two people with the same injury will get the same response to treatment in the same amount of time. Each of us is an individual, and so our bodies heal in individual ways.

Here are the improvements that I had which I didn’t have before:

 1.      My upper abdominal muscles have came back, which helped me to cough and pull myself forward

 2.       I could pull my tummy muscles in and hold it for 10-15 seconds while breathing in and out.

 3.       I could lift my head off the bed when I lay on my tummy just enough to turn side to side

4        My left thumb extended and closed to give me a strong pinch grip.

 5.       I could close my fingers in and slightly open them

 6.       My balance improved so much that I no longer fell sideways in my wheelchair.

 7.      The sensation came back to normal in my feet and other parts of my body.

 8.      The triceps in my right arm got stronger which helped with my transfers and lifting

up in my wheelchair, and I could stretch my arms up high to get things.

 9.       The quadriceps in my left leg came back a bit so that I could extend it and hold for a few seconds

10.     The new movement in my hips helped me to lift my legs better when I walked in callipers.

11.     I could cycle on a bike at the clinic; part of this is 'active' and part 'passive' movement.

12.     I could move my left ankle slightly.

13.     Hot and cold sensation came back in parts of my body.

14.     I could feel water being poured onto my body in some parts below the level of my injury.

15.     I could feel sharp pin pricks in some parts of my body.

Since I began going to the clinic in France in 2001, I have seen other patients who have experienced a variety of movements including back and tummy muscles, bladder and bowel function returning, better balance, ankle and other movements in their legs. I've seen patients go from full length to half length callipers as their muscles get stronger.

However, in March 2006, I had surgery in a London hospital to remove a cyst in my neck which resulted in me becoming paralysed down my left side. I was devastated that 5 years of laserpuncture recovery had ‘gone down the drain’ so to speak. I was told that I could get some feeling back up to 6 months from the time of my operation, but I became very low and dejected when the 6 months was up and I saw my London consultant in August, because nothing had come back. I didn’t give up hope and thought of the success I’d had from laserpuncture treatment in the past 5 years, so I went back to France in August, 2006, and after 8 sessions at the clinic, I regained some movement in my left thumb which was very weak, and I still had no grip. However, on my next visit to Mr. Bohbot's clinic in August 2007, after 6 treatments, my thumb grip came back so that I could pinch, pick up coins and small tablets. I was also able to undo and do up my hairclip by squeezing my thumb towards my index finger, plus the sensation down to my waist was more sensitive to touch, but I was still paralysed below that. My balance improved and I could cough without fear of choking.

On the evening of the 22nd of August 2007, my carer noticed that as she touched my left foot; which had been left completely flaccid since my operation in March 2006, I was able to see for myself that my toes moved, plus my left leg had more tone (and no longer falls sideways but now stays upright in the correct position) and muscle spasms due to my recent six sessions of laserpuncture at Mr. Bohbot's clinic in France. Besides all this, when my left leg is raised to different positions and I close my eyes, I can feel which direction my leg is being lifted into.

I know that laserpuncture works for me, so I will continue to return for more treatments in the future. I nearly gave up hope in the beginning, but by having laserpuncture treatment at the clinic in France, my quality of life has improved. Mr Bohbot gives people with Spinal Cord Injuries hope for a brighter future.

Clinical examination on her arrival at the clinic, 8 June 2001: C5-C6 incomplete, spastic quadriplegia

  • Motricity in her shoulder, elbows, tenodesis (wrists), slight flexion of the left thumb and left lower limb. Had a transfer of tendon (surgery).
  • Sensibility in patches below her SCI level.
  • Needs to be carried for her transfers (bed, car).
  • Needs help for daily life; cannot eat by herself, needs two people for her transfers; needs someone to push her chair.
  • Has difficulties to cough.

Progress

Limb measurements Pinprick tests
30/06/05 31/08/06 29/05/07

Beginning of treatment : 8 juin 2001

1. Independence:

  • 2002: can push her wheelchair on a flat road; does not need help to eat (holds her fork) and drinks with an adapted glass.
  • Aug. 2003: helps for her transfers (needs only one person).
  • Oct. 2003: can transfer herself from bed to chair and chair to bed but not to get in and off a car; begins to cook again with one help only.
  • April 2004: can dress the upper of her body without help.
  • 2004: can cut most of the food but meat; pinch is stronger.

2. Stability

  • Stands in a frame since her first coming at the clinic (June 2001).
  • Aug. 2001: when she stands in a frame, she can feel the weight of her body in her feet, knees, hips, and trunk.
  • Aug. 2002: can lock her left knee in a pool.
  • Aug. 2003: can lock her right and left knee in a pool.
  • Balance in her wheelchair is gradually improving; does not fall from her wheelchair.

3. Mobility

  • June 2001: can reposition herself in her wheelchair without help; it gets easier and easier as she has recovered more strength in her triceps (right and left triceps have the same strength) since her first treatment.
  • Aug. 2003: can move in her bed by using a pulley.
  • Oct. 2003: in bed, can pull on her pulley but needs assistance for the last bit.
  • April 2004: gradual improvement of mobility in bed.

4.1. Voluntary motricity

  • Aug. 2003: voluntary motricity (flexion and extension: grade 3) in wrists - no tenodesis - left thumb, right hip and left ankle.
  • 20 April 2004: same + voluntary motricity of left index, 2nd left finger; can stretch her two lower limbs voluntarily when sitting in her wheelchair (grade 3).
  • 25 May 2004: stretches and flexes her left thumb and has a strong pinch which allows her to cut most of the food (grade 4); flexes all her fingers and can stretch them slightly.
  • March 2006: had an operation to remove a cyst causing her to lose sensibility and motricity in her left side.
  • April 2006: dislocated her ankle; has developed osteoathritis just around the ankle bone.
  • Summer 2006 - clinic: recovered a lot better balance and feeling, plus her left triceps are stronger; recovered the movement in her left thumb but not as strong as before the operation; can now transfer herself on and off the bed using a slideboard and slidesheet only.
  • August 2007: recovered tone and muscle spasms in left leg, plus toes respond to stimuli. Pinch grip has returned in left thumb after surgery in a London hospital left her completely paralysed down that side.

4.2. Walking

  • 2001: KAFOs made by Mr Miallet in Bourges, France. Is able to walk in her KAFOs and push a walker until April 2002, date when she fractured her right fibula and tibia. Has not walk again since then because of a plate and screws in her right leg.
  • Since June 2001, regular and constant improvement of the strength in her triceps (can lift herself up from the chair to grab objects above her).

5. Sensibility

  • Light touch:
28 Aug. 2003: feeling of touch as pins and needles in patches all over her body.
